journalism's conventions

...thrown out the nearest window! There's something unsettling about seeing Roger Ebert admit to such emotional involvement with a film's grand questions.

As film reviewers go, he's always admirably genuine and unrestrained. Nonetheless, this particular review almost stunned me by breaking an unwritten rule: The Judge/Critic/Journalist (as public intellectual) always seems to see around his subjects, never merely sharing and endorsing his subject's viewpoint, passions, hopes, perspective.
