excerpt from my notes to self:

what do we know from introspection and happiness research? success tends to reduce anxiety levels; absolute position DOES matter. on the other hand, acceleration/velocity matters MUCH more to quality of mood/focus at the random moment. a comfortable but basically settled existence...has high prospective appeal, but low actual appeal. BECAUSE accel/velocity FEELS good at each point, we honestly believe that we want vast success on those fronts. and we DO want to feel those huge positive changes--all at once, even! on the other hand, what we're really buying is temporary bliss. we're not "getting to" happiness. instead, we're "getting happiness by getting to something".
